Japanese Art for Society and Communities

Throughout the decade, we as a society have seen some progress in acceptance and awareness, but there has also been a disturbing rise in wars and conflicts as well as massive detrimental climate and environmental changes. As a reflection of the fluctuating world, the arts have been enriched and developed to mirror the present state of their surroundings while also building on the past. Yet, while art may stem from the culmination of events that led to today, artists have always pondered a fundamental question: how does their art contribute to society as more than just a mirror?

On the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, THE BRICKS NYC will invite TANIOKA Yasunori, professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts, to our panel discussion and Q&A session to discuss the potential roles of Japanese art/artists in society, and how the arts can contribute to communities to cultivate hope and humanity.

　戦争の世紀といわれた20世紀を過ぎてもなお、世界は国際関係の緊張激化とともに、戦争や地域紛争は今日も止むことなく続いています。地球規模の気象変動や大規模森林火災、環境の激変も私の日常生活に大きな影響を及ぼしています。性別、人種間の差別的取り扱い防止の議論もようやく始まりそうな様相を見せ、社会の構図も少しずつ変化してきてはいるものの、未来のために解決しなければならない社会的課題は山積しています。アートは常に社会と共に歩み、その時代相を反映しながら作品が生まれ、多くの芸術家は人間と芸術とは何かという根源的な問いと向き合ってきました。不可逆的な時間軸と歴史観、世代から世代へと脈々と受け継がれる伝統のうえでのみ成立する芸術分野において、芸術家が急速に変化する現代社会との関係の中でその答えを探っていくことは、創作活動におけるひとつの命題にも成り得る重要なことであるとも言えます。

　22年前の9月11日、米国同時多発テロの起きたこの日にニューヨークの地で、社会におけるアートの役割について今一度考えてみることは、意義深い時間になることと思います。パネルディスカッションには、ニューヨークを創作拠点とするアーティストともに、現代日本アートを第一線で牽引し続ける芸術家・谷岡靖則氏(東京藝大工芸科教授)をゲストパネリストとしてお迎えし、アーティストの思考の一端を探り、アートの可能性、東京藝大が期待されている役割などのお話をうかがっていきます。イベントの最後にはQ&Aセッションも予定されています。

TANIOKA Yasunori -谷岡靖則

Born in 1958 in Hokkaido. Completed M.A. course in Craft in the Graduate School of Fine Arts in 1986, Tokyo University of the Arts. Tanioka works are produced by making full use of casting techniques that were taught from casting techniques in China, Greece, and other countries. He is always looking for hope that the molten metal solidifies again in the mold and becomes a substance, and that the hard and brittle nature of metal is also related to his image, and that his work will express the beauty of the material. He has exhibited in many galleries and museums in Japan, and France. Recently he is professor, metal casting in Tokyo University of the Arts. He lives and works in Tokyo.
